The act of letting go is unequivocally the most effective means to end suffering. It provides the ultimate relief from all of life's challenges -- although often is the most difficult behavior to put into practice. And yet the process of letting go is absolutely natural. We let go of our mother's womb when we are born into this world. When we become mothers ourselves, we are definitely ready to let go of our bulging bellies and aching backs at the end of nine months. Our toddlers leap from our laps and go off to pre-school. We heave a sigh of relief in one breath and catch ourselves choking on tears in another. When our children leave home for the first time, we will experience more of the same mixture of anguish and liberation, and when they marry or go off on their own, we will again revisit the paradoxical feeling that is triggered by the anticipation of good-bye. This cycle will occur over and over until one of us lets go of life itself.
There really is no alternative to saying good-bye to our children at some point (and ultimately everyone we come to know and love). When the time for farewell approaches, a part of us knows that we have an opportunity to open the door to other possibilities -- even while the dread of departure lurks in the shadows. If we can just be aware that this feeling of doom is connected to a signal conditioned by our ancient past, we may be able to reason with it a little. No, this good-bye does not necessarily signify the end. In fact, it could actually mean the beginning of new adventures and discoveries for everyone involved. And even if it is the final farewell, we will be given the strength to deal with that too.
I believe wholeheartedly in our ability to be strong and rise up, regardless of the good-byes we face.
